FINAL YEAR PROJECT | Oct 2023 - Aug 2024

Geographical Information System (GIS) Characterisation for Fire Weather Index (FWI) in Peatland Forest

This study presents a Geographic Information System (GIS)-based approach for monitoring Fire Weather Index (FWI) in peatland ecosystems, with a focus on the Raja Musa Forest Reserve (RMFR) in Kuala Selangor. The project integrates Groundwater Level (GWL) and Land Use and Land Cover (LULC) mapping into a dynamic Peatland Monitoring System (PMS) dashboard, utilizing interpolation techniques to predict fire danger. Using Inverse Distance Weighted (IDW) interpolation, GWL is dynamically mapped, and spatial data are visualized in real time. The study demonstrates the potential of GIS and IoT integration for environmental monitoring, especially for early fire warnings, by displaying four fire risk levels: low, moderate, high, and extreme on a PMS dashboard. Results indicate IDW interpolation’s efficacy in generating accurate GWL predictions, while LULC mapping enhances understanding of fire risk through analysis of vegetation and landscape characteristics. This approach supports sustainable peatland management, with recommendations for expanding sensor networks and integrating machine learning to improve fire prediction accuracy. Obtained Bronze Medal for Final Year Project Exhibition 2024 discipline in Wireless System Engineering.
